Squash Club

Loci designed a new squash court facility near the Brooklyn Piers as one of the selected firms in an invited design competition. We were inspired by the owner's eclectic collection of sculptural objects in the open yard facing the street, a distinctive feature of the neighborhood. Creating a squash court on the site was an organizing element that not only showcased the art, but became part of the collection. By alternating clear glazed openings and deep vitrine-like recesses in the court’s outer shell, the building contrasted glimpses of the game’s kinetic energy at the interior with a formal presentation of sculptures within the wall. We proposed a simple cross laminated timber (CLT) frame for the new building structure, elevated on pilotis. The building was finished with exterior terrazzo panels that evoked the industrial character of the neighborhood.
