gateway

middle school
New York, New York

The Gateway School is located in a 120,000 sf building originally built as a parking garage in 1927. Located west of the Lincoln Center complex, it is surrounded by several cultural and educational institutions.

To help organize disparate facade elements, we proposed draping the concrete structure facing the street with terra cotta sunscreens that shade the interior and add depth to the facade. The vertical recesses in the center of the facade are filled with obscure glass panels, illuminated at night, that contain a prominent graphic pattern based on the school’s logo. A perforated stainless steel banner is suspended over a canopy above the school entrance. These visually strong insertions are emblematic of the building’s original character and the school’s mission to educate young students in a rich learning environment.
