carroll school green roof

green roof with greenhouse and education spaces
Brooklyn, New York

A new, 22,000 sf extensive green roof on a public elementary school that restores the ecological and aesthetic value of open urban space. The $2 million roof is a learning lab for sustainability in the school’s curriculum and expands on the already successful after school and enrichment garden programs. A greenhouse allows students and teachers to observe and grow plants year round while a native species garden teaches about seasonal change as part of an interdisciplinary project that incorporates math, social studies, literacy, science, and art. The outdoor classroom meeting area and weather station further enhance educational opportunities for classroom learning and exploration.
